Magnesium L-threonate is the magnesium salt of L-threonic acid – a chelated complex in which a magnesium cation (Mg²⁺) is coordinated by two threonate residues. L-threonic acid is a four-carbon sugar acid, a natural oxidation product of ascorbic acid (vitamin C), which places this compound among metal chelates bearing carbohydrate-derived ligands. As a solid it appears as a white or off-white powder, frequently in a hydrated form (most commonly the dihydrate) and with moderate hygroscopicity, which is relevant to storage and to weighing out samples. The chelated structure facilitates transport of the magnesium ion in model systems and makes the compound of interest in studies of magnesium bioavailability.

In scientific research, magnesium L-threonate is used as a model chelated form of magnesium in studies of bioavailability, ion transport and the comparison of different magnesium salts. The threonate ligand, as a vitamin-C metabolite, makes the compound interesting in the context of carbohydrate-chelate chemistry. In the analytical laboratory it serves as a reference substance for magnesium determination (e.g. complexometric titration, ICP-OES, AAS) and for validating chromatographic methods that quantify the threonate anion. It is also studied with respect to the stability of hydrated forms and dissolution kinetics. This product is supplied strictly for research and analytical purposes and is not intended for food, diagnostic or therapeutic use.
