Magnesium L-threonate is the magnesium salt of L-threonic acid – a chelated complex in which a magnesium cation (Mg²⁺) is coordinated by two threonate residues. L-threonic acid is a four-carbon sugar acid, a natural oxidation product of ascorbic acid (vitamin C), which places this compound among metal chelates bearing carbohydrate-derived ligands. As a solid it appears as a white or off-white powder, frequently in a hydrated form (most commonly the dihydrate) and with moderate hygroscopicity, which is relevant to storage and to weighing out samples.
